Let's be honest: most beach athletes think about their skin twice a year — once when they're shopping for sunscreen in May, and once when something starts to look or feel wrong. Everything in between gets ignored.

That's a problem. If you're training hard on the coast multiple days a week, your skin is dealing with a trifecta of stressors that compound over time: UV radiation, salt water exposure, and mechanical abrasion from sand. Individually, each of those is manageable. Together, especially when layered on top of the inflammation that comes with intense physical training, they can cause real and lasting damage.

The good news? With a little knowledge and a consistent routine, you can train as hard as you want and keep your skin healthy for the long haul. Here's what you actually need to know.

What Salt Water Really Does to Your Skin

Salt water has a complicated relationship with skin, and the story isn't all bad — but it's not all good either.

On the positive side, ocean water contains magnesium, potassium, and various trace minerals that can support skin barrier function and have mild anti-inflammatory effects. A lot of people notice their skin looks clearer after regular ocean swims, and there's some legitimate science behind that observation.

But here's the catch: prolonged or repeated exposure to salt water pulls moisture out of the skin through osmosis. If you're swimming, paddling, or doing water-based training for extended periods — especially multiple days in a row — you're essentially desiccating your skin's outer layers. That leads to dryness, flaking, and over time, a compromised skin barrier that becomes more vulnerable to irritation, infection, and UV damage.

Different skin types respond differently. Oily or combination skin often tolerates salt water exposure better, since the ocean's natural astringent effect can help regulate excess sebum. Dry or sensitive skin types, on the other hand, can become raw and reactive quickly. If your skin tends to run dry, treat post-ocean hydration the same way you treat post-workout nutrition — it's non-negotiable, not optional.

The fix is simple but requires consistency: rinse with fresh water as soon as possible after ocean exposure, and follow up immediately with a fragrance-free moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. This locks in hydration before the drying effect sets in.

Sand Abrasion: The Injury You're Not Taking Seriously

Sand is essentially tiny particles of rock, shell, and mineral — and when it contacts skin repeatedly at speed, it acts like very fine sandpaper. For most casual beachgoers, this is a non-issue. For someone doing sprint drills, burpees, bear crawls, or any ground-contact exercise on dry sand, it's a legitimate skin integrity concern.

The areas most vulnerable to sand abrasion are predictable: knees, palms, forearms, the inner thighs during running, and any skin that contacts the ground during floor-based movements. Repeated micro-abrasions in these areas don't just hurt — they create open channels in the skin barrier where bacteria, salt, and UV radiation can do additional damage.

For high-intensity ground work, lightweight compression sleeves on the knees and forearms offer meaningful protection without restricting movement. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics that won't trap wet sand against the skin — that combination is particularly abrasive. Some athletes also apply a thin layer of zinc-based sunscreen (more on that below) over high-contact areas before training, which creates a mild physical buffer in addition to UV protection.

If you develop recurring abrasions in the same spots, that's a signal to add protective layering to your pre-workout routine, not to push through and hope it toughens up. Skin doesn't develop calluses the way hands do — it just gets repeatedly damaged.

Building a Year-Round Skin Protocol That Actually Fits Your Life

The athletes who maintain the healthiest skin aren't doing anything exotic. They're just consistent about a few key habits, every single training day — not just in summer.

Pre-workout: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen at least 15 minutes before hitting the sand. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are generally better for beach athletes because they don't break down as quickly under sweat and are less likely to sting if they migrate into your eyes during a tough session. Reapply every 90 minutes if you're training for extended periods, even on overcast days — UV penetrates cloud cover.

Post-workout: Rinse with fresh water immediately, paying attention to skin folds and any areas where sand has accumulated. Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser on the face and body — harsh soaps strip the skin's natural oils, which are already under pressure from the ocean and sun. Follow with a moisturizer that includes ceramides or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients actively repair and reinforce the skin barrier rather than just sitting on top of it.

Winter training: Don't let the calendar fool you. Winter UV index levels in states like Florida, Texas, California, and Hawaii are still high enough to cause cumulative damage, and cold, dry air strips skin moisture faster than warm weather does. Year-round athletes need year-round protection — the protocol doesn't change with the seasons, even if the sunscreen formula might.

When to Actually See a Dermatologist

Most beach athletes put off skin check-ups indefinitely, which is a genuinely risky habit given the cumulative UV exposure that comes with regular outdoor training. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends annual full-body skin exams for anyone with significant sun exposure history — and if you're training on the beach multiple times a week, you qualify.

Outside of annual check-ups, get anything evaluated promptly that changes shape or color, bleeds without obvious cause, or doesn't heal within two to three weeks after an abrasion. Early detection of skin concerns is dramatically more effective than late-stage treatment, and catching something early doesn't have to derail your training.

Your skin is your largest organ and your first line of defense against everything the coast throws at you. Treat it like the performance asset it is — because an athlete who's sidelined by a preventable skin issue isn't owning the shore. They're watching it from the sidelines.
