A Steroid is a type of hormone that takes chemical signals straight to the DNA in the Nuclei of a cell. The steroid that tells your muscles to grow is called testosterone. Testosterone is in everybody, even babies and little girls. Testosterone levels in maturing males are the most abundant especially during puberty and sometimes between ages 9 and 15. During the age of 14 the testosterone levels are so high that these males are growing extremely fast. Because of this rapid growth they are the most vulnerable to injury. The average male hits the peek of their testosterone levels in his late teens and levels slowly climb until about the age of 30. Therefore muscle mass peaks between the ages of 18 and 25 but with weights and the right food, muscle mass and strength can increase at any age. Testosterone can be increased by many things. First, by doing exercises that use the most muscle mass like dead lifts, power cleans and squats. Second by using heavy weights. Third by doing a lot of work which means multiple exercises, multiple sets, multiple repetitions. Fourth, by keeping rest periods fairly short. Last but not least by training consistently. Some scientists believe that testosterone levels will rise to the highest only until you have consistently trained for 2 years. The reasoning behind this is when you work out, your testosterone in your body spikes and immediately after the workout your chronic level in your bloodstream is low. It is a rise and fall. However, this rise and fall is a good thing because it means that this testosterone is bringing you what you want, muscle growth. After two years of training, this rise and fall seems to increase.
